Guidelines for Taped Interviews and Annotated Transcripts |
In addition to the weekly role plays, students will submit two tapes and annotated transcripts of interviews lasting between 15-20 minutes in which they demonstrate appropriate use of counseling and consultation skills. This is NOT to be a counseling/therapy session. Students should seek the consent of a partner to role play the client and have them sign the informed consent form (attached). Students can pair up with other students in the class. Topics for the interview can be anything, but should contain some emotional content to enable students to demonstrate skills such as reflection of feelings (e.g., the most exciting time in my life, the saddest time of my life, an important decision I must make, etc.). After introducing their role as counselor and explaining the counseling process, the student should demonstrate the skills listed on the Annotated Transcript & Response Rating Form (attached), as appropriate, during the interview. The interviews must be taped. Students must fill out the Annotated Transcript and turn in the tape, and the Annotated Transcript to the instructor on the due dates. Instructor and/or graduate assistant will listen to tapes and grade each counselor response recorded on the Annotated Transcript for accuracy and appropriateness on the following scale 0= Inaccurate or Inappropriate; 1= Minimally Accurate or Appropriate; 2= Accurate and Appropriate; 3= Very Accurate and Appropriate. Students who are unable to demonstrate accurate and appropriate counseling and consultation skills will not pass the course.
